Dr Van Dessel is a graduate in medicine of the University of Ireland, Galway, 1982 and a graduate in science of the University of Ireland, Cork, 1984. He undertook initial postgraduate medical posts in surgery, medicine and anatomy in Ireland before moving to Liverpool in 1984 after which he completed a further 5 years of hospital training and one year as a GP trainee. He took up GP partnership in St Helens in 1990 entering the practice of Drs P and MJ Gregan in Nutgrove Rd, Thatto Heath.
Dr Van Dessel has kept close to the evolution of the practice at all times with a key role being practice team and service development. The practice transferred to its current purpose built site at the Spinney Medical Centre in 1994; Gregan House administration and quality development centre was refurbished and opened in 2004. |

Dr Van Dessel is a GP Trainer and Tutor with the Department of Postgraduate General Practice, University of Liverpool, and North West Representative for the National Association of Primary Care Educators, NAPCE. He is vice- chairman of the Mersey Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He is a QOF assessor and GP appraiser for Halton and St Helens PCT.
His main clinical interests are the consultation, musculoskeletal medicine, pain management, palliative care, teaching and making innovation work for patients. |
